Daily feeding planner
Cat Food Portion Calculator
Set up your cat once. Then open this tool before each meal: it shows how much to feed right now, keeps track of what your cat has eaten today, and suggests what to feed.
How it works
Daily calories are estimated with the standard veterinary formula (resting energy = 70 × weight in kg0.75, multiplied by a life-stage factor). Your profile and daily log are saved in this browser only, and the log resets every day.
Cat profile
This tool gives general estimates for healthy cats and is not veterinary advice. Cats with kidney disease, diabetes, allergies or other health conditions need a plan from a veterinarian. If your cat stops eating for a day or more, call your vet.
How to Use the Cat Food Portion Calculator Every Day
Feeding the right amount protects your cat from obesity and from losing weight unnoticed. This cat food portion calculator works out your cat’s daily calories, then turns them into cups, grams or cans, and keeps count of what has been eaten today.
- Create a profile. Enter life stage, weight, spayed or neutered status and your goal.
- Add your food’s calories. Find kcal per cup, can or kg in the calorie content statement on the label.
- Check before each meal. The tool shows the portion for the next meal. Feed it, then tap “I fed this meal”.
- Log treats. Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories, so enter them as they happen.
- Weigh regularly. Log your cat’s weight and adjust with your vet if it drifts.
How Much Should I Feed My Cat?
Vets estimate calories in two steps. Resting energy requirement (RER) is 70 × body weight in kg0.75. That number is multiplied by 1.2 for a neutered adult, 1.4 for an intact adult, 0.8 for weight loss, and 2.0 to 2.5 for a growing kitten. A neutered 10 lb (4.5 kg) adult lands near 260 kcal per day.
| Life stage | Typical meals per day |
|---|---|
| Kitten under 6 months | 3 to 4 |
| Kitten 6 to 12 months | 2 |
| Adult and senior | 2 or more small meals |
Dry Cat Food vs Wet Cat Food
Dry food is easy to measure and store. Wet food is about 70 to 80 percent water, which supports hydration. Many owners feed both, which is why this calculator supports mixed feeding. Wet food should not be left out for long, because it spoils within a couple of hours at room temperature.
Tips for Accurate Cat Feeding Portions
- Weigh food on a kitchen scale. A scoop can be off by 20% or more.
- Count treats and table scraps toward daily calories.
- Not sure your cat is at a healthy weight? Try our Cat Body Condition Score Calculator.
- Recheck portions every few weeks, and always after a vet visit.
Cat Feeding Calculator FAQ
How many calories does a cat need per day?
A neutered 10 lb (4.5 kg) adult cat needs roughly 260 kcal per day. Kittens, intact cats and active cats need more, and cats on a weight-loss plan need less.
How much dry food should I feed my cat?
It depends on the food’s calorie density. Divide your cat’s daily calories by the kcal per cup on the bag. This calculator does that for you.
How often should I feed my cat?
Kittens under 6 months usually eat three to four small meals a day, and older cats do well with two or more small meals.
Can I mix wet and dry food?
Yes. Choose mixed feeding, set the share of calories from wet food, and enter the calories for both foods.
Is this calculator a substitute for a vet?
No. It gives a general estimate for healthy cats. Cats with medical conditions need a plan from a veterinarian.
